MONTEGALLO Interview

How and when did your passion for hats develop?

I think I was born with a hat. I have always had this passion it is an accessory that is part of me.

When did you start Montegallo and why did you choose this name for your brand?

I couldn’t find the right headdress to wear, I was looking for a natural straw hat, but not too "country" looking. I wanted something more appropriate to wear in the city or on an evening out. Montegallo is the name of my family’s home; it is where my most beautiful ideas begin, just like this adventure.

What is the brand’s philosophy?

I believe that Montegallo was sustainable even before the word sustainability existed. The modern circular zero waste economy has always been practiced in rural life. In my region, le Marche, already at the end of the 19th century, women made headwear with stems of ripe wheat to shelter from the sun the men who worked in the fields. Still today the straw that is used for our hats is recovered from the stem of ripe wheat and each hat is unique and sewn entirely by hand, by skilled master hatters, carrying on this centenary tradition. Recycled materials, recycled traditions, recovery of an Italian know-how and craftsmanship that we are losing; this is our philosophy.

Your hats "communicate" this strong link between the territory and its traditions, how and where they are made?

All our production is in le Marche. We rely on small workshops and the modelling is still assigned to the local ladies, my leading hat masters.

What are you presenting for this edition of White?

The winter edition couldn’t be complete without our felts, soft and sophisticated velour lapin headwear with a range of colours to discover and fall in love with.
