LAURA THEISS Interview
Modern, almost futuristic. Or romantically delicate. Laura Theiss has a double soul that she has been expressing since 2010 through her line of hand-knitted clothes made by Lithuanian artisans. The inspiration for the FW21 collection comes to her from the strength and flexibility of fibers "Resilient and durable can help us become more confident and courageous in uncertain times."
When did you first get into knitting?
"As a child in Lithuania. I learned to knit from my grandmother, and I became extremely passionate about learning every technique I could. Then I specialized by studying at Central Saint Martins in London, and when I founded my brand, I decided to produce in Lithuania, where there is a strong craft tradition. I am the one, who invents new techniques, and when I give my designs to my artisans, I instruct them on how to make them, enclosing a whole series of notes that illustrate the steps to execute the work.
What is the concept of the FW21 collection?
"Pandemic gave me a chance to take the time to reflect on my archive: revisiting iconic stitches and techniques: from nature-inspired patterns to geometries. The result is a collection where elegance and comfort find a new balance: sheer sensual dresses or gritty one-shoulder pieces with asymmetrical designs in dark tones; warm and comfortable oversized crocheted sweaters in bright and bold colors, even metallic: an ode to the excitement of the 80s to shake up the monotony of loungewear and boring work uniforms."
What is your favorite piece from the FW collection you are presenting at WHITE?
"The crocheted petal pink slip dress: a delicate wish for a return to normalcy."
