WSM INTERVIEWS - DHL

With an unparalleled portfolio of services ranging from parcel delivery domestic and international to industrial supply chain management, DHL is the world's leading logistics brand. With approximately 380,000 employees in more than 220 countries and territories around the world, DHL connects people and businesses safely and reliable. With tailored solutions for growing markets and sectors, including technology, life sciences and healthcare, engineering, manufacturing and energy, auto-mobility and retail, DHL is positioned as The Logistics Company for the World. The Deutsche Post DHL Group, of which DHL is a part, aims to achieve zero-emission logistics by 2050.

What are the cornerstones of your approach to sustainability?

"Everything we do can be summed up in these few words: 'Connecting People. Improving Lives." We have a very specific purpose: connecting people, improving their lives. And our approach to sustainability is inclusive of the three dimensions in which human beings move: the environment, society and good business practices. For more than 30 years, the group has been adopting innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce the impact environment of shipments and contribute to the protection of the ecosystem. In 2017, DHL was also the first company in the logistics industry to set a goal of reducing shipment transport-related CO2 emissions to zero by 2050."

How do you work towards circularity and what role does DHL play in promoting and implementation of circular behavior within the fashion industry?

"The fashion industry is among the largest sources of CO2 in the world, but today it has an opportunity to move from a linear to a circular business model by adopting a paradigm that allows it to thrive sustainably. The transition to a circular economy is based on redesigning supply chains and a long-term strategy based on the 5Rs of circularity - reduce, repair, resell, renew, and recycle. While the successful transition to circularity is undoubtedly a shared responsibility and effort, logistics actors are its natural backbone. Indeed, circularity changes the way materials and products move, and efficient management of the flow of goods is the very essence of logistics. Innovative logistics solutions can therefore help promote circularity and become a key factor in facilitating physical and IT flows. Especially when it comes to optimizing production volumes and materials, extending product life cycles, launching new usage patterns, or developing new solutions for end-of-life recycling. Along the product value chain, DHL has identified three key factors and ten building blocks that enable a successful transition, from the most innovative materials and designs to on-demand manufacturing, from smart returns to reusable packaging.

That's not all: DHL has developed ad hoc services to allow Italian excellence the best internationalization process and, for more than ten years, DHL Italia has been partnering with Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana to exalt the craftsmanship of Made In Italy in the world and to represent and maximize the importance of this sector. After last year's success focused onThe craftsmanship in a sustainable key, "The Upcycling Project" 2022 involved the young students of the Modartech Institute, who transformed the discarded uniforms of our couriers into new cool garments. Finally, support for young talent is confirmed by the Young Designer DHL Award, an award that for several years has aimed to provide the best young designers with concrete support in expanding to foreign markets."

What important goals has DHL already achieved in terms of sustainability and what are the next steps in the short and medium term?

"We continue our efforts on the emissions reduction front: in 2017, the DPDHL Group became the first logistics company in the world to set the goal of zeroing its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and, between now and 2030, has announced investments in green technologies of €7 billion. In 2020, CO2 emissions were 33 million tons and the goal is to reduce them to less than 29 million by 2030, but without a 30-year commitment of progressive measures already taken, defined in our sustainability roadmap, emissions today would be 46 million. For short distances and the last mile, the Group continues to implement electrification of its vehicle fleet: by 2030, 60 percent of delivery vehicles globally will be powered by sustainable fuels. New infrastructure such as Malpensa, Bologna, Naples, and Mu
