ERMANNO GALLAMINI Interview

 

Angelo Gallamini is the fabrics whisperer. Heir to a long tradition in the field, he creates garments starting from the suggestions of materials and never from designs. His creations are very sophisticated, yet they are classics. They resist trends and remain current in the wearer's wardrobe, constantly conferring a certain elegance.

What is his significant talent?

"Our specificity knows fabrics perfectly; I've been dealing with them for 33 years. We create sartorial garments of timeless charm from those fabrics, all excellent, printed, and embroidered by us. I'll give you an example: I see our garments from a few years ago that are still just as beautiful, and do you know why? Because they were never in fashion. Not being in fashion is a choice, which allows you to remain relevant to the creative content you want to give."

How do you describe the FW21 collection?

"I want to imagine that my garments can give the woman who wears them, especially in this particular historical moment, a breath of joy and freedom. I thought that joy and freedom were the identifying adjectives of my collection, prints of flowers combined with rural landscapes and geometric patterns.  The materials are wool, cashmere, baby llama, and camel. The care in the choice of fabrics is fundamental for me. The garments are always born from the piece of fabric and not from the design of the garment. The colors are that undergrowth, until you get to mustard and yellow, never abandon my beloved blue, gray combined with eggplant. The embroideries: I have included my precious poppies, which were already present in the spring/summer collection to color the grayness of winter" 

You often talk about a physical relationship with the customer. Do you manage to nurture it through the web as well?

"Our product is so particular and constructed that we do little or nothing online, I get some requests from customers who already know my garments, but they start asking me for all kinds of measurements. If it's already complicated the relationship with a famous customer, we can't start new relationships just through the Internet."

Is having clients for whom to make ad hoc collections a plus?

 

"We are the Pininfarina of garments, the client comes and makes requests to us and based on their needs and feasibility we do it. We have developed a very close relationship of total trust with a whole series of clients. At the moment, not having a direct relationship and not meeting each other is penalizing, and we hope to be able to return to normal as soon as possible".
