BGBL Interview

Where and how did BGBL was born?

BGBL is a Made in Italy bags brand that blends sport and stile, vintage and modern. BGBL was born by the end of 2018 thanks to Alfredo Viola Srl. Behind Alfredo Violasrl there are Doriano Ottavian and Elisabetta Viola, Doriano is the financing partner and Elisabetta represents the creative part. “As a designer I believe that a project strength lays in its ability to adapt, to create aconnection between two apparently opposing concepts. Every project is thus a response that fills a gap and solves an issue, all you need to start is the inspiration. Projects can come to life anywhere ad any given moment: while you’re walking your dog or during a basketball when a ball, unexpectedly, ends up on your lap”. The brand BGBL describe the product, with a contemporary declination: from bagball to BGBL.

What’s your brand’s DNA?

We believe in second chances, in redesigning and redefining the rules. That's why we design and create top quality bags repurposing second-hand basketballs without affecting their features. Each piece is crafted in Italy and it is unique and incomparable, like a bounce. Our goal is to combine eco-friendly awareness and a deep-rooted passion for Italian design, adopting sport’s multidimensionality as the main concept. Each bag is unique and embodies a different aspect of the history of sport. BGBL is a sport-based project: we reuse second-hand basket balls and combine them with high quality leather. Leather which is a by-product of another industry. We collaborate exclusively with Italian artisans: we produce the collections in the Riviera del Brenta, our main suppliers are located between the Triveneto and Tuscany. We supply basket teams with a brand-new basketball on exchange for those they no longer use.

Each of your bags tells a story, where do the balls you transform into bags come from?

BGBL embodies the concept behind the word bounce where each basketball represents a second chance. Our bags are designed to bring history back to lifethrough a flawless blend of recycled and new fabrics. Each bag comes with its own story and its own personality. The most difficult aspect was to create the basket teams network: when you start a project and you have to work with a lot of different people it’s important to explain the idea and the benefit to upcycle the basketball. And the first “yes” arrived and then all the others… We pick up the balls from the veneto basketball teams but we want to work with all Italy basket teams: everyone supports everyone, it’s a win win game.

Where and how do you create your bags?

The research and development of the design is totally made in BGBL , in Treviso. We choose the leather and the accessories, the fabrics and the colors for the bags collection. After that, we collaborate exclusively with Italian artisans: we produce the collections in the Riviera del Brenta, our main suppliers are located between the Triveneto and Tuscany. BGBL collection has been designed to be a year-round presence in any wardrobe. Our mission is to craft a long-lasting item which can be used at any time of the year. Can Luxury and Sustainability get along?

I coined my idea of luxury four years ago in India during a holiday trip, I was there a month and I understood what it was for me. The ability to choose, to be for example in a context that would bring me back to a home dimension. A New Delhi in a flurry of strong emotions and strong images my luxury was able to return to a size of the house. It is not a standard thing but having a heartfelt feeling. The possibility of choice. Nowadays, choose sustainability is a luxury: it means you give the right value to production chain and you respect the equilibrium without affect it. It means you choose the quality instead the quantity and the made in italy. You can emphasize the value of the old object: they are rich of emotions and past. That means they are unique.
